Adium is an multi-protocol instant messaging program for Mac OS X operating system. Adium is free software and is released under the GNU GPL licence, it uses the free library libpurple (which is based Pidgin) and libezv (for the Bonjour protocol).
The program was launched in 2001 by Adam Iser as a support AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) for Mac OS operating systems, and time later, with the addition of the libpurple library, it began to incorporate other protocols.

Main features of Adium 1.3.1
- Multi-protocol, supporting at present the vast majority of popular instant messaging protocols.
- Available for Mac OS X 10.4 onwards.
- It is multi-lingual. For now supports Spanish, Portuguese, English, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Swedish and Turkish.
- Supports multiple file transfers between contacts, with unlimited transfer rate.
- Incorporates WebKit in the talks.
- Supports connection to different messaging networks simultaneously.
- Compatible with grouping of several windows of conversation in one window using a system of tabs.
- Introduces a system of aggregates and Plugins that increase its functionality through a community of developers who bring these Plugins for free. A considerable part of the functionalities of Adium are provided by these plugins.
- Allows encryption of talks in full way (roundtrip) using the OTR cryptography protocol (Off-the-record Messaging).
